Bryony makes a decent living as a skilled seamstress. She's happy living with Kerine and though she's dated a little in the past, she's not found anyone to build a life with long-term – and would never want to leave behind her sister if she did.
When she and Kerine discovered the truth about Emeri's situation, Kerine offered to go and fetch Sabrina home, so long as Bryony stayed with Emeri. That way she and Emeri could take care of each other, providing companionship and, where necessary, Bryony could support Emeri as the illness progressed.
Bryony was initially reluctant. She'd had a crush on Emeri long ago – he's 10 years older than her – and put it aside as childish fantasy. But once she's living with Emeri they discover she has latent magical talent and he becomes her mentor. And, while knowing it will end in heartbreak, she finds herself falling in love with him.
Bryony knows if her social status weren't enough of an obstacle, his illness would be, yet she can't deny her feelings, nor give up all hope.

Emeri is the Master Sorcerer, entrusted with the safety of the village, and lives in the house atop the hill, long a seat of the Maivern Clan, a powerfully gifted and respected if these days less influential family.
He lived a comfortable life until Sabrina left unexpectedly with Tovan, a sorcerer Emeri distrusted. Angry, and grieving over her absence, he became withdrawn. Little knowing how much the villagers feared his wrath, he took their distance to mean they didn't care about him or his family.
Emeri received no response to the letters he sent to Sabrina and after he fell ill with the Scourge, an incurable disease affecting those with magic – and the disease which killed his uncle - he was too sick to make the journey to find her. He's thankful when Kerine offers to go in person to beg Sabrina to return so that he can say a proper goodbye.
He's writing his memoir, recording everything he's learnt, but when he discovers Bryony's latent magical talent he offers to mentor her. Teaching her gives him a new way of looking at magic, and rekindles his enthusiasm. He finds himself falling in love but fears the pain he'll cause Bryony if they become too close, believing he won't live more than a few months.
